What is eco-friendly cleaning?
Eco-friendly cleaning uses plant-based, low-VOC or fragrance-free products instead of harsh chemical cleaners, along with reusable tools like microfiber cloths. In Wellington, our standard clean uses these products by default, at no extra cost, starting at $120 for a studio and $185 for a 2-bedroom home. Recurring plans start at $89 weekly.
What “eco-friendly cleaning” actually means
The phrase gets used loosely, so it is worth being specific. Eco-friendly cleaning generally means three things: plant-based or low-VOC products instead of the harshest chemical cleaners, fragrance-conscious formulas that skip heavy synthetic scents, and less waste, such as washable cloths instead of paper towels and refillable bottles instead of single-use ones.
It is not a single certification, and no government body issues a universal “eco-friendly cleaner” label. That means the claim is only as good as the company making it. Ask what products are actually used, and whether it costs extra. If a company cannot answer either question specifically, the claim is likely just marketing.
Why it matters, especially in Wellington
Cleaning products release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air as they are used and for a period afterward. Research on the subject is still developing, but the pattern is consistent: plant-based and fragrance-free products generally release fewer VOCs and less hazardous emissions than many conventional cleaners, and fragrance-free formulas show the clearest reduction. For households with asthma, allergies, young children, or anyone sensitive to strong scents, that difference is one of the more practical health choices you can make in your own home.
Wellington adds a few reasons of its own. Many homes here are close to barns, paddocks and riding rings, and pets, including horses nearby, make gentler indoor products worth choosing. Equestrian season also brings more foot traffic through mudrooms and entryways, which means more frequent contact between cleaning products and the surfaces your family and pets touch every day.
What we use, and why
Plant-based, low-fragrance products are our default on every visit, not an upgrade you have to ask for or pay more for. Here is how we apply that across a standard clean.
- Plant-based, low-VOC cleaners for counters, sinks, appliance exteriors and bathrooms.
- Fragrance-conscious formulas so the house does not smell like a cleaning product after we leave.
- Microfiber cloths instead of paper towels, washed and reused rather than thrown away.
- Refillable spray bottles to cut down on single-use plastic across visits.
- HEPA-filtered vacuums for homes with heavy dust, pet hair or fine debris, which capture more than a standard vacuum recirculates.
When we use something stronger
A few jobs need more than a plant-based product, such as heavy mineral buildup in an older shower or years of grime in an oven. When that happens, we will tell you rather than quietly switching products, and it is limited to the spot that needs it, not the whole visit.
What eco-friendly cleaning does not mean
It is worth being direct about the limits of the claim, since the term gets used to sell things it does not really deliver.
| The claim | What it actually means here |
|---|---|
| “Green” or “eco-friendly” | Plant-based, low-VOC products by default, not a government certification |
| “Chemical-free” | Not accurate for any cleaning product. The goal is lower-toxicity, not zero ingredients. |
| “Safer for kids and pets” | Generally true for VOC exposure, still worth telling us about specific allergies |
| “Better cleaning power” | Comparable for everyday grime; some tough jobs need a stronger product |
| “Costs more” | Not with us. It is our standard product, included in every price. |
Eco-friendly vs. conventional cleaning products
It helps to see the difference in plain terms rather than take a marketing claim on faith. Here is how the two generally compare across the things people actually care about.
| Plant-based, low-VOC | Conventional chemical cleaners | |
|---|---|---|
| VOC emissions | Generally lower, especially fragrance-free formulas | Often higher, varies widely by product |
| Scent | Light or unscented | Often strong synthetic fragrance |
| Cleaning power, everyday grime | Comparable for most household jobs | Comparable for most household jobs |
| Heavy mineral buildup or grease | Can need more time or a targeted product | Often faster on tough buildup |
| Best for | Homes with kids, pets, allergies or sensitivities | Occasional deep, stubborn jobs |
| Cost to you | No extra charge with us | N/A, this is our fallback for tough spots only |
Neither option is right for every single task. A responsible cleaning service defaults to the gentler option and only reaches for something stronger when a specific spot needs it, and tells you when that happens.
Who benefits most from eco-friendly cleaning
Every home can use gentler products, but a few situations make the difference more noticeable.
- Homes with young children. Kids spend time on floors and put hands in their mouths, so lower-toxicity products on those surfaces matter more.
- Homes with pets. Paws and fur pick up residue from floors and furniture. Fragrance-free, plant-based products are gentler on sensitive noses and skin.
- Anyone with asthma or allergies. Strong synthetic fragrances are a common trigger, and fragrance-free products show the clearest reduction in VOC exposure.
- Homes near barns and paddocks. Equestrian families already manage a lot of dust and residue from outdoors; gentler indoor products are one less thing to worry about.
- Anyone sensitive to strong scents. A house that does not smell like a cleaning product is often the most requested outcome, independent of any health reason.

Cleaning eco-friendly homes across Wellington
Wellington's equestrian season shapes what a home needs from a cleaner more than almost anywhere else in Palm Beach County. Boots, hay, arena dust and barn traffic move through entryways and mudrooms daily during season, and gentle products matter more when a home is near barns and paddocks.
We serve Palm Beach Polo, Wycliffe, Olympia, Equestrian Club Estates, Saddle Trail and the surrounding ZIP codes 33414, 33449. Renovating? Ask about post-construction cleaning with HEPA vacuums for fine dust.
Entryways and mudrooms
During equestrian season, entryway floors take the heaviest traffic in the house. We give mudrooms and boot areas extra vacuum and mop time so fine dust does not spread through the rest of the home.
Renovations and post-construction dust
Wellington sees a lot of home renovation work. Construction dust is fine and gets into vents, corners and fixtures that a standard clean does not reach. Our post-construction cleaning service uses HEPA vacuums for exactly this.
Beyond Wellington, we bring the same plant-based standard to homes across Palm Beach County. See our full Palm Beach cleaning service guide or all cities we serve.
The research behind VOCs, in plain terms
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are chemicals that evaporate easily at room temperature. Many conventional cleaning products release them while you use them and for a period after, which is part of why a freshly cleaned room can smell strong. The Environmental Protection Agency lists cleaning products among common indoor sources of VOCs, alongside things like paint and air fresheners.
Studies comparing conventional and green-labeled cleaning products have found that green products, especially fragrance-free ones, tend to emit a lower number and concentration of VOCs, including fewer of the compounds considered more hazardous. Fragrance appears to be a bigger factor than the “green” label itself: a fragrance-free product, plant-based or not, tends to perform better on this measure than a heavily scented one.
It is worth being honest about the limits here too. At least one peer-reviewed study found no strong evidence that green products improve overall indoor air quality compared with conventional ones, and the research base is still growing. The practical takeaway is not that green products are a cure-all, but that choosing fragrance-free, plant-based products where possible is a reasonable, low-cost way to reduce one source of indoor air pollutants, particularly for people who are already sensitive to it.
Who this matters most for
The research points to the biggest benefit for people already dealing with asthma, allergies or chemical sensitivities, and for the people who spend the most time close to freshly cleaned surfaces: children who play on floors, and anyone home during or shortly after a clean. It matters less for someone who is out of the house all day and has no particular sensitivity, though most people still prefer the absence of a strong chemical smell.
How to choose an eco-friendly cleaning service
“Eco-friendly” is an easy word to put on a website. These questions separate a company that means it from one that does not.
- What products do you actually use? A specific answer, ideally with brand or ingredient information, beats a vague one.
- Does it cost extra? If a “green clean” is priced as an upgrade, ask why it is not the standard.
- Can I request my own products? A company that says no to specific allergy needs is not flexible enough.
- What do you use for tough jobs? A good company is honest about when it needs something stronger.
- Are you insured and background-checked? This matters regardless of what products are used.
- Can I see the checklist? A written checklist shows what actually happens on a visit.

Keeping a greener home between visits
- Use a mat at every entrance, and encourage a shoes-off habit near barns and paddocks.
- Wipe down muddy boots and tack before they come inside.
- Open windows when the weather allows, to let fresh air move through.
- Choose fragrance-free laundry products if anyone in the home has sensitivities.
- Vacuum high-traffic entryways between visits if the household is very active.
